Tiffany Lawson Dance is excited to be in partnership with the Chicago Public Libraries for another season!

We kicked off our partnership four summers ago with an event at the Museum of Science and Industry, with a special appearance by Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel. Tours to 20 Chicago Public Libraries continued during the 2015-16 season, where we focused on bringing The Brothers Grimm Fairytales to life through music and dance.

Three summers ago, our program was performed at another 20 libraries and contains elements of travel as we "Move Through Chicago." We explored some of Chicago's most iconic landmarks, by way of bus, train, bike, and boat.

In 2017, we brought our original superhero ballet, MELODY, to the libraries. The company's performance featured original songs and instrumentals by Nicholas Davio, and original choreography by TLD company members. We followed Melody on her journey to defeat her evil twin, Dissonance, with the help of her superhero friends.

This past summer, we headed out to 15 libraries, presenting an original adaptation of Shingebiss (a Chippewa Indian tale). The children that came out to the shows learned how Shingebiss, a little brown duck, prepared for and survived the harsh winter and the North Winds. With the help of our brave duck Shingebiss, we explored and learned about our "spheres."

During the fall/winter of this year, we did a short tour at the Thomas Hughes Children’s Library (part of the Harold Washington Library at 400 S. State Street), featuring Spanish Fairy Tales. More information (in both English and Spanish), here:

Tiffany Lawson Dance presents a series of "Fairytales from Spain" in 3 installments, featuring violist Sixto Franco and Artistic Director Tiffany Lawson.

Tiffany Lawson Dance will explore fairytales from violist Sixto Franco's childhood in Segovia Spain, "Grandfather, Grandson and Donkey", "The Devil and mother in law" and "The most important thing is to Get up". Combining the Spanish language, historical folklore, live viola and interactive dancing this series by Tiffany Lawson Dance provides a unique learning experience through a new lens. Come take this new adventure into the Spanish culture of Fairytales, Music, Dance and Spain!

The Pre-Professional Artists Program is designed to allow TLD to connect with the students, giving them firsthand experience with a professional company and allows the company to give back to the community. Growing our dance students supports their love for dance and helps them express individual artistry. TLD provides the students with perseverance and determination to help guide the future of the dance world. The program is good for students serious about a career in dance, choreography, or teaching.

The students in the program during past seasons attended regular rehearsals with the professional company, performed their own piece at the 2+Compliment benefit in January 2016, and danced alongside the company in March 2016 for the premier of Primary.

In 2017, we had the pleasure of expanding our program to include a visual artist and musician. Our Pre-Professional Dancing Artist, Maren McChesney, has been with TLD since season 2 and was the title character in our original superhero ballet, MELODY. Maren has spent the last two summers at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy's Summer Ballet Intensive in New York City.

Our Pre-Professional Visual Artist was Maren's twin, Phoebe McChesney. Phoebe not only created the comic book inspired artwork for MELODY, but also danced as Melody's evil twin, Dissonance, in the superhero ballet.

Alex Schildgen rounds out our Pre-Professional Artist Program participants. Alex came to us by way of one of our season 4 dancers, Molly Jo Mathe. Molly Jo choreographed for TLD and had her 16 year old cousin, Alex, compose the music for her piece. If you attended our HARMONY festival in March 2017, then you may have had the privilege of hearing his beautiful composition; and perhaps you even met him, as he made the trip from Lancaster, WI to witness his creation live on stage.

This past season, we welcomed back Maren McChesney as our Pre-Professional Artist. She had a featured role during the Yellow section of PRIMARY. At only 15 years old, she is already proving to be a superstar in our dance community.
